Blog - Moon Over Maize

Another Passion of Mine

April 21st, 2009 by moonovermaize

If you’ve taken a look at my jewelry you have probably noticed that I am quite passionate about pregnancy, natural childbirth/homebirth and breastfeeding. Much of my jewelry is designed around these topics. Five years ago when I was pregnant with my first I didn’t even know homebirth was an option or that people still breastfed their babies over the age of one.

Well, fast forward 5 years and I’ve now had one hospital birth, a fabulous homebirth, nursed my oldest for 3 years and my 21 month old is still happily nursing! My husband came across a few articles lately that he found interesting and wanted me to share. The first is about the safety of homebirth and the second is about the amazing benefits of breastfeeding (especially extended breastfeeding).

If you are interested in more of these types of topics you should check out Donna’s blog. She is full of fantastic information, statistics and personal experiences!

I sometimes wish I could have one more baby so that I could do everything right this time. There was so much I didn’t know the first two times…..

    Have a great day!

If I’m ever blessed with another baby I want a homebirth for sure. One hospital birth was quite enough for me!
My little one is 17 months and still nursing. I have no intention of weaning him. I figure he’ll do that on his own. Thanks for sharing those articles!

Great info. Home birth isn’t an option for me as I am a complicated pregnant lady (blood clots, etc..), but I am so proud of you for doing it.

I breastfed all my kids over a year and it looks like the third is no where near thinking of giving it up. I wouldn’t trade it for a bottle in the world!

Angie- That’s fantastic that you’ve breastfed for so long! I completely understand that homebirth is not for everyone. What I want is for women who have healthy pregnancies and babies to know that there are other options for them. They should be able to know they have choices, do their own research and make the best decision for themselves and their babies.

Connie- I bet you’ll have another ;) I’m so sorry for the troubles you had when Meghan was born.

Madeline- Go for it! As long as you fit the criteria for having a homebirth I think it’s a great way to go! And congrats on nursing your 17 month old!! It’s such an amazing bond :)

I’d love to do a home birth for my first child (and thereafter) & have been looking into subject, including watching it done on TV. It seems so much better and less traumatic for both the mother and the child than a hospital experience! So I’m keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that there won’t be any complications at any point along the way.

It’s great to see that the topic being discussed and there are women who have done it and had a good experience. I have heard that they encourage home birth in Netherlands, don’t see why women in other countries cannot have the same choice.
